Mine is one relatively old. I got it perhaps 5-6 years ago new. It has worked fine until recently. Rather than a QC issue, more likely a build/design issue. I would guess the problem is related to age. It has been very lightly used, but has always seemd fine until I put it on the *istD. Maybe I just noticed it because the *istD complains loudly when the lens is not on A. My other cameras have been more forgiving. Nonetheless, it is a relatively recent problem.
