While shooting butterflies at an outdoor garden center last summer, I came 
across the same critter.  It took some review at home to figure out it was not a 
hummingbird, but a moth.  They do mimic the hummingbird's flight.  

I don't know what their range in North America is, but they survive near me 
in Chicago where winter typically reach -10 degrees F (-25 deg C).
