Ahhh--For portraits, you would definitely want a different lens if you plan
to shoot wider than f/5.6 and consider softness a liability, and not a
virtue. I agree. As an available-light shooter, I've retired it as an
indoor lens. And outdoors, I dunno--I never think of taking it. (Too many
choices!)
I have an 85/2M that I seldom use since I acquired two 105/2.8s. I keep
thinking I should sell it, but my 10-year-old daughter keeps wanting to use
it because it's so long in focal length yet so small and light, almost like
a 50/1.4.
I suppose the only reason it still commands such a high price is that the
other 85s are so damn costly.
If you want to kill two birds with one stone, might I suggest you do as I
did: Get a 100 or 105mm macro! These nearly always can serve as sharp
portrait lenses.
