Hi Tanya,
When it is next time to renew your insurance you may want to
enquire about "portable valuables insurance" as an extra on your home
contents policy. I've just added that to mine and it cost me an extra $100
for $3,000 worth of insurance and covers both theft and damage. There were
two different versions, "specified valuables" where you quote each item
individually and the value of that item, and unspecified where you just
insure everything in that category (i.e. also video equipment, musical
instruments and so on) for a maximum payout figure.
The first way, "specified", only what you have named gets covered, but it
gets covered for the full amount. With "unspecified" there was a limit of
20% of the total for any one piece, so in my case the most they would pay
out on one body or lens would be $600. As none of my bodies or lenses is
worth more than $600 this wasn't a big deal and $3,000 was comfortably more
than the combined value of gear that I would take away with me. The big
advantage was that effectively all of my equipment is covered off site, so
long as I never have more than $3,000 worth with me at any one time and
anything extra that I buy is automatically covered.
I guess if you get a brand new Z1p and only have one or two other lenses and
the MZ50 the 20% rule would work against you and the "specified" option
would be best. The cost for $3,000 worth of cover was exactly the same
either way. This was RACV insurance and my former NRMA policy had a similar
option, so there's a good chance your insurer had it too.
Hope this helps, even in hindsight,
