Best Shot Out of an Airplane:
"Flying Above the Matterhorn" by Jos van der Hijden. Using the window to frame the shot was brilliant. Love that big engine and the wing coming in on the left. I guess those are actually mountains down below, not clouds. Never mind, even if there are no clouds, it's a great shot, and belongs in this month's gallery! <vbg>
Coolest Looking Cloud:
"New Years Day, 2003" by Dick Jones. Many other of this month's photos were of the more "spectacular" variety of clouds, but I really liked your "hole in the clouds". Very unusual, and very cool looking, imho. The silhouette of the raised walkway and railing in the foreground is brilliant, makes for a terrific composition. Thanks.
Most Imaginative Interpretation of Theme:
"Orange Spice" by DJE. When I first saw it (even though I'm guessing by the title that it's a cuppa tea), it made me think of that old Carly Simon song with the words "Clouds in my coffee..." in it; was that from "You're so Vain"? Anyway, at first I thought, "why'd he cut off the bottom of the cup?", then after looking at it a bit, I realized that it draws the eye up to the vapour rising from the cup. Damn if those old Spotties and Taks can't still take a great pic, eh? <vbg> Great Shot!!
Best of the Month:
"White Sands Clouds" by Ken Waller. This is a real knockout - ranks right up there with your Ice Flower shot, Ken (and that's very high praise indeed!). This photo is so sublime! Deceptively simple, I sat staring at it for what seemed like 15 minutes, looking at the details: the ripples in the sand, the shadow at the top of the sand, the pattern made by the grass leaves, the clouds, the shadows. Composition and exposure are perfect. I wonder what this sucker would look like blowed up real big and hung on a wall. It could only be spectacular. Thanks so much for sharing with us, Ken. I am not worthy, I am not worthy, I am not worthy... <vbg>
Well, that's it (and quite late at that) for this month. No time to comment on all of them, but hell, January PUG is only a few days away, right?
cheers, frank
