Hi! SB> ... that is the question.
SB> I went into a local shop today and asked about getting some film SB> processed and put onto a CD. I was told that for their high res work SB> they use bitmapped files. Whoa! said I ... never heard of burning a CD SB> to bitmapped files. Gotta ask the PDML about this before handing over SB> any film. SB> So, here's the deal, AKAIK: The system used is Agfa, and the software SB> burns the CD to bitmapped files which I'd then convert to TIFF or PSD SB> for later editing. SB> My questions are: Why use a bitmap file when everyone else seems to be SB> using something other (or are they)? What is gained or lost by using the bitmap >> TIFF/PSD scenario? Is better to use a TIFF or PSD right SB> from the beginning, no? I used to get BMPs from on of the labs I dealt with. Standard Windows BMP is 8 bits/channel. But even my lowly Epson 2450 can give me twice this figure. So, from the start you lose have of what you might have. Notice that (if I am not mistaken) JPG also can do only 8 bits/channel. Normally, when I scan I store PSDs that I clean up of dust and call them "raw"... Then eventually I get down to JPG (for Web or for Print)... HTH. Boris
