I think you're pretty close on that figure for jazz freaks. I read a few years ago, that less than 2% of CD sales are jazz - and, I could be wrong, but I doubt that as many jazz fans are downloading music as more popular music fans do. So, in terms of actual amount of music accumulated (as opposed to bought), I bet your .1% is likely accurate.
OTOH, jazz clubs (at least in Toronto) seem to be doing okay, and that's quite heartening - jazz after all is meant to be listened to LIVE. And, the jazz festivals, both big and small, seem to attract many people as well, which is good for the genre.
I know that I try to buy as many new jazz CD's as I can (I do buy the odd used one if I see a good one <g>), just to do my part to try to keep the music alive. I think that jazz and classical are basically money losers for the big labels. I don't know how the labels that only do jazz (like ECM) and classical (like Deutche Gramaphone) do it...
cheers, frank

Oh, I don't find the computer mindset so strange, after all we are all sitting here behind a keyboard. However only 0.1% of the population are serious photographers, and it seems like about 1/2 of that 0.1% are into Jazz. That has to be more than a coincidence.

Seems to be a lot of them on this list. Seems like there must be some sort of connection between the photographic mind set, and the jazz music mindset.
As well as the computer-tech mindset. Fascinating...
Happy New Year, all!
