"The Last Magician" by Janette Turner Hospital has as one of its main characters a photographer named Charlie Chang, the "last magician" of the book's title.
As I remember the book, Chang's photography obsessively spirals around
something hidden in his & the main character's past, thereby finally
illuminating it.
