lol! that's funny Bill! I am the same with our annual Melbourne Cup horse race. They say it is "the race that stops a nation". And everyone who is anyone bets on it - except me! I think it is just crazy to bet on such a race, with almost no chance of winning when almost all of the horses are as great as each other. Your friend's reference to NYE being "amateur night" strikes me as being a very similar philosophy...
