Ni-CD and NiMH have far lower internal resistance > so may provide a far higher initial inrush current which could fry > the flashes invertor circuitry. Besides, doesn't a set of alkalines last for quite a long time? I've used the (original) TR Power Pack with the AF400T, and the "juice" seems to last for quite a large number of flashes (especially when compared to using the little AA Grip Power Pack alternative).
