I have the 28-70 f4 AL and the 28-105 f4 -5.6 powerzoom. Both are excellent lenses, though I find the 28-70 to be marginally sharper, primarily at the short end. At focal lengths from 71 - 105 mm, the 28-105 winds hands down though. :-)

There is apparently a lot of sample variation in the 28-70. Some people have reported it to be a real dog, others (like me) find it to be on par with good prime lenses. So, if you are considering it look at sources that would allow you to test drive it and decide if you have a good one.

What's the sharpest normal-range, autofocus, consumer, used zoom I can put

From what I've read, it might be the FA 28-70 f4. Are there others I
should consider instead? What about 3rd-party lenses?
