I saw something in the manual (probably the grip "manual") which may explain it. It warns that if you have both the grip and the body turned on, that you must have the switch in the correct position. If the grip (or the body?) on-off switch gets pushed to an intermediary position it can confuse the camera, it doesn't know whether it is coming or going ...
