Interesting isn't it! It's one of those wonderful scraps of obscure trivia
I've found. I've somehow managed to find more info too! I Yahooed
["first and last letters" and legible and scrambled]
http://au.search.yahoo.com/search/aunz?p=%22first+and+last+letters%22+and+legible+and+scrambled&vc=
and was surprised to find more results than I thought I would. This is where
I read it originally
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/25/2350239&tid=167
and an update, if the internal letters are just simply inversed, it's hard
to decipher. If I had to guess why, it's probably something to do with the
second and penultimate letters being the furthest from where they belong..

Ceehrs!,
Ryan

PS. More difficult than reading it would be the scrambling.. you missed an
'e' in your 'blivee' :-) A useful way to do it is start the first letter,
and alternate the following letters with a left and right arrow key, then
ending with the correct last letter.
