TIFF and 'best' JPG are very similar in quality, the TIFF has the edge in quality (but only if you intend to make extensive modifications to the image). The penalty is a file size of around 7 times larger than the equivalent JPEG. The RAW convertor definitely generates TIFF and JPG files of an inferior quality to the camera when you compare edge detail, this needs to be fixed.
