Neat Image can't work miracles (particularly in the case of 3200ISO shadow
noise) however it does quite a good job when used with custom noise profiles.
At the link below are a copy of my current custom noise profiles for the *ist
D, they aren't perfect but they seem to get the job done nicely. They aren't
100% colour neutral but it won't make a difference in most of cases.

The profiles are for effective ISO of 800, 1600 and 3200 for both JPEG and TIFF
file formats. The shooting conditions in all cases was in camera sharpening at
minimum, contrast at minimum and saturation at middle setting WB Daylight.

The noise filter setting have a very great effect on the quality of the output,
I've also included a copy of my default settings "rob" as a starting point.

I'll update these profiles as soon as I get hold of a truly neutral target and
I'll include tungsten profiles, I'll leave this set up for a week.
