If you know the judges are using a projector, I think you should, too. Use what they use.

When it comes to tonal range, I suppose you have to judge the scanner's output for what it is vs what it could be (as demonstrated by the projected slide) but I was surprised to see at least one image where I found the scan to be acceptably sharp, and the projection to not be so. IU think that was because part of the photo was sharp, part was not, and that problem was much more obvious in the projected image.
