ITV is free, as are Channel4 and Channel5. And if you pay for a digital encoder (from 30 pounds I believe, one off) plenty more free channels, though some only operate part-time. If I had the option to watch anything on BBC or another channel (as I did in the last World Cup) I would go for BBC without second thoughts. Two reasons for that: higher quality commentary and no effing ads! In Greece people pay for TV but don't notice (part of the electricity bill, would you believe it, so noone can opt out) and still get ads on state TV. Beeb rules, though I agree with Cotty that dumbing down is happening and should not be tolerated.
