I wish I had experiences like that. When I wanted an enlarger, I just wrote a check for an Omega D2VXL.
The creative experiences that come out of having to improvise are a real asset in the long term. There's a story about how Elliott Erwitt would wash his film in the toilet, making a succession of flushes ... Bill Casselberry is great at improvising ... this list has many examples of such creative solutions.
