This conflicts with dozens of web publications state the formula I used and posted. I didnt see a single instance of steves formula. Not that he's wrong of course.
Yep, and Herb pointed me (off-list) at one particularly detailed site that explicitly stated (without justification) that "my" formula was incorrect. :-)
So I don't know. The formula without the squares still seems wrong to me, but I haven't done the maths to prove it one way or another. FWIW, "my" formula fits the one piece of available data better than "yours". Take your pick. :-)
