The P5/P50 was designed for A lenses.  
It works fine with K, A, F, and FA lenses.

With A lenses, the LCD goes into a Program Action or Program Depth of Field 
mode.  You change it with the two rectangular buttons at the top of the LCD.

You had a K lens on it, or had it set to a specific aperture.  The buttons 
will take you thru 4 modes, AUTO (aperture-priority AE), Metered Manual 
(speed shows), 1/100 sec., and Bulb.

So now you know how to work it...
