Charles,

the *ist D does not display the metering mode in the finder, nor on the top
display nor in the 'info' screen - but is visible in playback mode after you
press the info button two times - page 16 in the manual.

If you do a long exposure in M with the lens cap on and with noise reduction
switched OFF you will inevitably find bright pixels when examining the image on
a computer screen. This is not a problem really, as that is why noise reduction
is there. You DO have a problem if you find erratic pixels with noise reduction
ON or at shorter exposures (where noise reduction does not work anyway).
I have one erratic pixel like this in my camera which shows up every now and
then and I have yet to decide whether it annoys me enough to send the camera
in.
