There have been several worms which search in the web cache
on the infected machine for email addresses. So no, they
don't crawl the web looking for addresses; but yes, they are
using addresses gleaned from the web. 500-600 hits a day
on my web site may have something to do with the number of
worms I get from people who have no acquaintences in common
with me.
It is possible (I don't know how likely) that the infected
machine sending worms to the address Tan uses only for PDML
mail belongs to someone who is not subscribed but recently
read some archived messages on the PDML web site.
