Depending on what type of Polaroid these are.....

Some needed wiping/dipping into a solution to neutralise the processing
chemicals and fix them.  if not done thoroughly enough, old processing
chemicals might cause a smell.

The "self-contained" ones are plastic and some of the chemicals used to
produce them exude over time.  Concentrating in the box might be enough
to produce a distinctive odour.

I would have thought that the first would also degrade the image.

Try taking them out for a few days to air and then putting them back. 
Sniff again in a week or so to see if the smell is back.
