I've seen similar things happen with HP printers when you run out of just one color. (It doesn't last long though, if you're out of one you're just about out of them all).

The simple answer is I'm out of yellow but that has never happened before - will it print gray if the yellow nozzle is blocked?
This happens in word, excel and nozzle checking... I haven't tried it in pure yellow in photoshop yet.
