I have scanner set up to save scans as 16 bit tiffs. The scan files are just over 138 megs each. When I save them in Photoshop with LZW compression enabled, they _grow_ to just under 164 megs. With 8 bit TIFFs, the LZW compression does indeed compress, as opposed to inflate file size.

I something broken in my Photoshop? It is v7. I could swear it used to actually compress these things.

When I save in zip compression I get a little bit of compression - the file is about 10 megs smaller.

Aside from being 16 bit, there is nothing fancing going on with the TIFFs - no layers, saved masks or channels, or anything like that.

Does anyone know of a utility to compress 16 bit TIFFs (that leaves then as 16 bit files)? I tried ACDSee (v4 - not the newest) and it compresses the TIFF by dropping it down to 8 bits and then applying LZW compression.

Thanks -
