I haven't actually done the obvious test, but I'd really think so. I do have some *istD pictures that I shot for next month's PUG about to get printed, so I'll have a better idea in a day or so.
I have gotten some images from the 1 1/2th generation 2.77MP Nikon D1h made into 8x10s after working them over in photoshop, and I'd say they are as good as what I was getting from 400 speed cheap color print film. THe 2nd generation 6MP *istD should do better.
Of course "film" is a wide range. I'd assume for landscape and portrait we are talking about slow color film which is a tougher standard to match than the 400-800 speed color film I used to use in journalism, and much better than any film at 1600-3200.
Resolutionwise, 6MP allows "photo quality" at 8x10 if you don't crop.
