The answer is orthochromatic film which was not sensitive to the red part of
the spectrum. So portraits shot with it would have very dark lips,
especially if it was of a lady wearing red lipstick. I'm not quite old
enough to have ever shot any, but that info, and the film, was still
available when I was learning photography.
