I humbly suggest the purchase of a 10lb bag of rice which
should then be flopped down upon some convenient rock, tree
stup or somesuch. Then firmly snuggle the rig down into this
whilst aiming & framing and other such acts of photographic
preliminaries. When all is as should be, apply a soft but
firm downward pressure and fire the cable release.

while sometimes this method is a bit awkward to arrange, the
        results are generally rock steady.
