Andy,

I have answered several questions regarding this lens
lately...I copy below my first contribution that was
the longer...please feel free to ask if you need more
information.

I recently purchased a 'like new' 28-105/3.2-4.5 to
replace my 28-70/4, made a home test comparing the 2
lenses and wanted to share the results with the list,
but I felt that this was of little interest given the
present 'digital fever' and that this is not a
particularly interesting lens for APS size sensors.

But since Kostas' question, I recover what I was
planning to say:
I have to say that I was happy with the 28-70 buy I
found it too short, mainly in the long end. The 28-105
power zoom has a good reputation, but it seems that it
is bulky and I am in the side of those who prefer
lightweight equipment, so the 28-105/3,2-4,5 was my
price/quality choice (24-90 was also an option but it
is pricey and I like my A24/2,8).
My tests are maybe too simple, but they have proved
quit consistent showing that primes are sharper than
zooms, so this time I wanted to know if I was going to
loose sharpness with my new purchase(glub!).
I simply shoot the same scene with different lenses at
different apertures (using a tripod). Then I scan the
negatives and compare them side by side.

28-105 vs. 28-70: I have tested them at 28, 35, 50 and
70mm, and at 4, 5.6, 8 and 11, and the 28-105 is
clearly better than the 28-70. Color rendition is
similar, but the 28-105 is sharper. The difference
increases at wider apertures and the 28-105 at 3.2 is
better than 28-70 at 4. (ufffff)
Both show barrel distortion at 28, although it is
difficult to appreciate which is worst.

28-105 vs. A50/1.4: prime is better, no surprise.

28-105 vs. A70-210 at 70mm: difficult to tell but I
would say that the A zoom is slightly sharper.
