This is quite true.  If I hold a all-too-typical newspaper shot of a
group of people taken too close with a wide-angle lens (with some of
the people's heads "stretched" towards the corners) very close up
(which for me, is easy - I'm nearsighted, so with my glasses off my
close-focus point is quite close to my face), it looks relatively
more normal.
