Of course you can make a big prime or a small zoom.  If your Pentax 24-90
were an f/1.8, and of equal optical quality to the Sigma 24/1.8, and still
smaller, THEN I'd be amazed.  There are plenty of 28-xx zooms smaller than 
my 28/1.4 Nikkor.  I think there are CARS smaller than my 28/1.4 Nikkor.
I doubt any zoom that ends at 300mm is as big as a 300/2.8 (or anywhere 
near as sharp).
