Either way I know its based on *something* open source!

KHTML is the rendering engine that underpins Konqueror; Gecko is that of Mozilla. "KHTML, like Gecko" is *presumably* there so that websites that only support Mozilla and IE will see the "Gecko" in the UA string and send the Mozilla version of the site, which KHTML/Konqueror/Safari will be happier with.
