Thanks, Chris! Glad you liked it.
I will pass on the zipped .psd to you later today.

Here's what I thought:
Chris's image is taken on a hazy, hot day. I can see a faint mirage at the
horizont. The colours have a washed-out look, and there's very little sense
of depth in the landscape, even though the composition encourage it. I want
to put more juice in the colours, and remove as much of the haze as I can. I
also want to put some blueness into the sky, since Chris specifically asked
for it. Would never have thought of that myself. This will be interesting.

Here's what I did:
1.
Rotated the image 1 clockwise to straighten the horizon, and cropped away
the corners.

2.
Marked a rectangle containing all the sky and down to the horiszont, and
feathered 200 pixels.

3.
Copied the selection into a new layer (HazeLayer).

4.
Created a Levels Adjustment Layer, grouped it with HazeLayer, and adjusted
Gamma to 0.30. This removed most of the haze, but made the sky look like a
smog blanket.

5.
Marked a rectangle from the background layer as in step 2, and feathered 10
pixels.

6.
Copied the selection into a new layer (SkyLayer), on top of all other
layers. Keep the selection active.

7.
Performed a Smart Blur on the SkyLayer. Not really sure if it's necessary,
but it makes the sky look smoother.

8.
Opened another image with a nice sky colour, and used the eyedropper tool to
select a suitable blue.

9.
Back to Chris' image, create another layer with a filling gradient from
foreground colour to transparent. Since the selection from step 6 was still
active, the gradient goes from the top of the image down to the horizont.

10.
Adjust opacity of the Gradient layer to taste. My setting was 43%, but that
will vary with the hue selected with the eyedropper.

11.
Finally, create a Hue/Saturation layer on top of everything, and boost
saturation as desired. My settings were:
Hue: +4
Saturation: +39
Lightness: 0

It took me a while to figure out how to approach the problems. Learned a lot
from this experience.

Thanks again,
Jostein

PS. Using a pola-filter is easier...:-)
