I've only come upon this thread lately, as no one changed the subject line, and I didn't realize I was missing a lovely "format debate". Oh well. Maybe I'm repeating what's already been said, but too bad - don't change the SL, these things happen! <g> (lecture over)

I honestly think that for much of what I do, it could only be done on 35mm. Medium Format would be too bulky, LF even moreso.

I know, someone's going to say, "look at what Weegee did with his Speedgraphics on the street". Well, yes, it was amazing! But, thinking of my latest PAW, where the lovely subjects were about 2 to 3 feet from me, I doubt that I'd have gotten that close with anything other than 35mm (or digital equivalent). Any format smaller than 35mm won't give me the resolution I need - and I say that because so much of what I do has motion blur or significant OOF areas (like the whole frame? <VBG>), so I don't need resolution for ultimate sharpness, but rather to prevent more blur than I already have <g>.

But, really, MF and LF have their uses, and I agree with Tom that they aren't as restrictive as some may think. If I were doing portraiture or landscapes, or architectural, I would only use 35mm because I couldn't afford another system. Even ~some~ street work could be done just fine with MF - but you'd miss much, too, IMHO.

My 2 centavos worth...

cheers,
frank

I have to laugh at some of the ideas that folks have about what they never have used.

I had an interesting link to an article about photojournalists comparing a Speed Graphic kit to a Canon Digital kit. The Speed Graphic kit weigthed 17lbs. The digital kit is 59lbs.

Ah, found the link.

As for the argument that any LF camera can easily accomplish what
only a refined 35mm body with a top-notch lens can accomplish,

well,

please give me a finely tuned 35mm rig any day, and you may keep
your wooden box and large but semi-engineered lens...

You might want to look at what companies like Canham and Rodenstock
are doing these days before you talk about semi engineered anything.
