I happen to have an A 1.4-S teleconverter, and an M42-K adapter. The
adapter fits in the teleconverter, and it should work fine. You won't get
any form of auto aperture control of course, but IIRC you don't have that
on the screw-mount 500/4.5 anyway.

Optically, I'm less convinced. The 1.4-S is for lenses 300mm and shorter,
and my experience is that on the A* 300/2.8 performance is noticeably
worse than the 300 is alone (whereas my Nikkor 300/2.8 with TC-14B is
not). There was a 1.4-L teleconverter for lenses 300 and longer, with a
long "nose" to fit into the body of the big telephotos which had no
element right at the back. Apparently this design allowed for better
optical performance. Nikon also makes dedicated "telephoto" 1.4 and 2.0
converters with this design. From what I can see of the 500/4.5 diagram
this teleconverter should fit the 500/4.5 (although perhaps NOT the
A* 300/4) and might work better optically.

If you were to give me the 500/4.5, I could let you know how it works...
