Hi,
the Pentax first belonged to his wife, Leila, and he 'acquired' it
from her.

He features quite heavily in their publicity material, for which I
assume he is paid, and I imagine they provide his cameras, lenses etc.
free of charge. I have an edition of 'Leica Fotografie International'
which includes a photograph of him signing the shares of stock
issued when Leica AG was listed on the stock exchange.
But I think he would use Leicas anyway, and was using them before he
became well-known as a photographer. The event which launched him to
prominence was the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan, when Salgado
was in the best position for photos and managed to squeeze off something
like 75 frames in under a minute using Leicas (and possibly also Nikons)
without the use of a motorized winder. The money he earned from the photos
paid for his first large-scale personal projects which became the 'Workers'
book.
