Usually the magazine will have a set rate which they pay depending on where in the magazine the photo is used.
Clean Run (US agility publication) uses the following rates:
Cover $200
Inside $15
Inside � Special Request from CR $25
Photo of the Month $75


The circulation isn't huge as it's aimed at a niche market, but I suspect that it will be larger than the new start-up mag. I have made a couple of submissions to the magazine and signed an agreement with them over the use of the photos and agreeing to the above fees.
Obviously different magazines will also pay differently, but check with them first before asking for $100 a photo. You could be selling yourself short or you could be pricing yourself out of the market!
