Two things that jump out at me are that it looks like the *istD handled a pretty tricky lighing situation with aplomb, and secondly, I like that there are no visual cues that tell us that this is anything other than a wilderness situation.
I did do some fiddling with the value curve, but I think you are right that the *istD did a good job of getting close enough that the info was there.
Nice tight framing, great comp. I like the fact that his mouth is just a bit open - kind of a tiger candid.
