Hmmm..... I used to believe, that "zone focusing" was a feature in cameras, that do not have a REAL Auto Focus system: Instead it focuses in Zones. This could be 4 zones or more: 1-1.5 m, 1.5-3m, 3-7m and 7m to infinity. The camera Auto Zone Focus System will choose the most apropirate zone before exposure. As opposed to a convcentional autofucus. A fast way to go with a wide angle lens P&S camera. I think I have seen this described in camera adds.

The turn the focus ring until the infinity mark lines up with the "tic mark" for the f-stop you're using. The "tic mark" on the other side of center will tell you what's going to be in focus. So, just to pull some numbers out of thin air, you pick f/5.6. When you line up the infinity mark on the focus ring with the "5.6" tic on the barrel you might find that the opposite tic indicates 10m. That means everything from 10m to infinity will be in focus.
