What are you ultimately going to do with the images? If you will print 
them, or have them printed, the output device will print them at 8 bits.

I use 16 bits only for the most important images. Even still, onscreen, 
I can see very little difference between 8 and 16 bits. So I rarely use 
16 bits.

The PEF importer will import images at 16 bits. If you want them to be 8 
bits, you must convert them. This takes just 3 clicks.
