The *packets* may still be able to get through, but that doesn't mean that the *emails* can. SMTP is not IP. :-)

Well that would be very curious. The ancestor of the internet was developed to allow communication even when some communication nodes and routes are wiped out by nuclear blasts. The thing is designed to find other routes.
