I once spoke with a ranger who told me about a woman that got lost going off the Appalachian trail. She had a cell phone and a GPS unit, so she called the park service and told them her coordinates. This was the first time it had happened this way, and it wasn't easy for them to figure out where she was just using latitude and longitude. They are better prepared now (new maps with better L/L markings) since this is a more common combination of equipment.
