FWIW, Canon and Nikon have recently announced that they will, between the two of them, manufacture 2.3 million or so DSLRs this year. at one time, analysts expected that about 2.2 million DSLRs would be sold in 2004, 2 million of which would be accounted for by Canon and Nikon. the increase in Canon and Nikon numbers are because they have increased production targets for the Digital Rebel and the D70. Canon has sold about 600,000 Digital Rebels worldwide so far since its introduction. the total SLR market is still expected to be about 3.2-3.6 million cameras. Canon is expected to annouce a camera even cheaper than the Digital Rebel soon, and a new flagship DSLR camera too. Olympus will also announce a more entry level 4/3 system DSLR body.
