There are really only two position on this isuue. Either you put faith in CDI's test
or you don't. If you do put faith in these tests then you have a problem; you need to
explain why CDI is right and everybody else, tests and user experiences, are wrong.
If we look at these Pentax lenses: A 35/2.8 (rated 3 by CDI in optical quality), A*
85/1.4 (3), A* 135/1.8 (3) and A* 300/2.8 (3) together with the FA* 85/1.4 (5). You
won't find any test or Pentax user who by any reasoning would rate the FA* 85/1,4 as
~40% better optically than the A* 85/1.4 or A* 135/1.8. Nor would you find any tests
out there or user experience who rate the A 35/2.8 as remoteley equal to the mentioned
A* lenses in optical quality. You will not find any test whose result warrant a "3"
rating on a scale from 3-5 in optical quality in the above mentioned A* lenses. Other
tests have shown that all the A* lenses mentioned above are stellar performers and
that they approach the maximum performance thats theoretically possible. User
experience is among similar lines.
Both isolated rating and relative ratings from CDI on the above mentioned lenses don't
makes sense both from a user perspective and from other tests. Hence, if someone
adhere to them they need to do some explaining. That they are reliable because they
are french isn't a valid argument.
I'm not saying that the A 35/2.8 and the FA* 85/1.4 are rotten lenses. Just that
relative merrits don't measure up.
