PDML'ers,

I recently purchased a Gitzo G-1276M Mk2 Magnesium Universal Ball head from
B&H Photo Video used and in of 10 condition according to their rating system
for 120 bucks. I got this ball head because it can support up to 11 pounds,
but more importantly is extremely flexible and would be good for Macro
Photography. It also has a nice graduated base for panoramic shots.
Overall it seems like a versatile, light, and strong ball head. Now I just
need the tripod to go with it. I like the Gitzo tripods, in particular, I
like the 1227LVL, who doesn't right? The problem with that tripod is the
price, at 600+ on the internet this thing is not cheap of course, and I'm
wondering if it's really worth it to spend that kind of money when the
regular Mountaineer can be found new for 350-400. Is anyone on the list
familiar with Gitzo tripods in particular the LVL series? How useful is the
leveling ability of those tripods? Is it more of a pain than a benefit, and
does it affect stability in anyway?? Finally, are there any other tripods
from other manufacturers that can match the stability, strength, and
portability of the Gitzos at a lower price and still work with the ball head
I purchased? Thanks for your advice.
