My brother asked me _why_ stopping down increases DOF, and I tried to draw diagrams to explain how I'd assumed it works ... Apparently I don't know the right questions to ask Google to get it to give me diagrams already made by other people, but hey, an excuse to fiddle around with Visio for a while, eh?
Unfortunately that also means I didn't manage to STFW to verify that my guess is actually why it works, so I'm appealing to y'all; or at least those of you with fairly large monitors or who don't mind a lot of horizontal scrolling. Is the explanation at <a href="http://www.access.avernus.com/~glenn/tmp/dof.html> basically correct? (Please don't spread the URL around too much; in addition to my not being certain I've gotten it right to begin with, the wording of the explanation isn't very thorough; it's intended for someone I can converse with in parallel to his looking at the page -- if I've got the details correct and people think it'd be a useful web page, I'll try to figure out the best sizes to make the images, write the text up properly, and move it to a more permanent URL.) -- Glenn
