I think the software is discussed at Panoguide, but anyway - I have tried Panotools, and it is very professional - it can do miracolous things like removing chromatic aberration as well, correcting lens distortions to the third degree (even the dreaded moustache distortion!), etc. Only, being written by an academic person, it's not exactly intuitive for us non-mathematicians :) But there are, I think, some usable frontends for it. Definitely worht trying even if just to correct distortion and chroma aberration. The "gigapixel" image (can't remember the link, but it's a stitched image from many,many 6MP dslr shots, over 1 GP in size, the detail is amazing) was produced using this software.
