While not really planning to, I wandered into the Photo and Imaging Expo at Darling Harbour (Sydney) this afternoon.
Filling three halls of the exhibition centre, it seemed to be, unsurprisingly, all digital, digital, digital. Pentax distributor CR Kennedy had a reasonable stand in the middle of the main hall, but only had it's P&S cameras for hands on play. The Pentax SLRs were behind glass cabinets. And no interesting lenses were on display. Just the usual zooms. Lots of big Sigma glass and Hasselblads though.
This didn't compare to the nearby Canon stand - all their cameras were hands-on, including the amazing EF1200mm on a 1Ds. I know I'm stating the obvious, but, man, that autofocus is fast and smooth. Scanners, printers and compacts were there as well as an interesting cabinet of previous DSLRs and sensors were on display. Sony, Olympus and Nikon's stands were pretty impressive too (though i don't understand why, in the Oly stand, there was an F1 car with a Grand Prix video game running.).
Lots of lovely Epson printers to look at, and the photo kiosks at Kodak and Agfa were pretty popular.
I think the industry is pretty healthy, for all of the huge changes it is going through.
