The ring surrounding the front lens element (the one with the 50mm etc printed on it) unscrews counter clockwise to reveal three small screws. These screws affix the part of the lens body with the filter threads to the front of the lens. The ring can be unscrewed using a friction coupling by pressing it against a rubber stopper or something similar and turning the lens body against it. The old rings are aluminium and the later ones are plastic, sometimes the aluminium ones are very difficult to unscrew particularly if the filter ring is dented.
