I think you need the digital pin. But I do know how to trick the *istD and AF360FGZ into working TTL instead of P-TTL. Use a lens not set to A. The flash will still say it's in P-TTL mode but it gives a single flash and exposes correctly. Put the lens back on A and you have P-TTL - double flash and matrix metering. That's all there is to it.
